Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. But her parents would not allow her to act until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry made her debut as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry come back to California and find work as an actress in the theater. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple as part of The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal that starred her dad. In addition, she played in the role of a younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being connected to the character.
